Great British public sick of Scottish MPs

By Toque - Posted on 28 March 2008

According to new MORI research only 48% of the public understand the issue of English Votes on English Laws. It's a figure that I find outrageously high given that even the Conservative Party that proposes it is at a loss to explain how it would work.

Constitutional Issues

In my opinion the vast majority of those that think they understand English Votes on English Laws, don't. Which perhaps explains why Prof John Curtice leaves it out of his BSA poll.

The issue of Scottish MPs voting on English legislation is the one that annoys voters the most.

Scots-voting

Which makes one wonder why it is the constititional issue that is most keenly ignored by political parties and the least salient of issues for constitutional reformers. No wonder the general public are sick to the high teeth.

UPDATE (after some number crunching):

If we discount Scottish and Welsh opinion and just take the English results (as MORI should have done).

England as a Whole
Very Satisfied 3.02% 18.79% Satisfied
Fairly Satisfied 15.77%
Fairly Dissatisfied 23.98% 48.71% Dissatisfied
Very Dissatisfied 24.73%
Neither Satisfied nor Dissatisfied 22.25% 32.51% Am I bovvered?
Don't know 10.26%

Therefore, 72% of those that aren't ambivalent are dissatisfied with Scottish MPs' voting rights.

Any party that jumps up and down about this stands to lose a few votes in Wales and England, and neither the Conservatives or Labour are willing to accept any losses in those areas.

Not sure if I understand the methodology here as they do not add up to 100 . However , the item on " Scottish" votes on English matters is quite clearly skewed to generally against it in the sme way that there is a quite clear overall satisfaction with the voting age of 18

It's nett satisfaction or dissatisfaction, measuring strong views either way, so 'don't knows' or 'neither satisfied or dissatisfied' are omitted.

That's why it doesn't add up to 100%.

46% of British are dissatisfied with Scots voting on English laws, 20% are satisfied.

36% of Scots are satisfied with Scots voting on English laws (that'll be the Scottish Labour vote).
